Surrogate Pay

Becoming a surrogate is easier than you think— and surrogacy compensation is legal in most US states. How much do surrogates get paid? That will depend— and your friends at Extraordinary Conceptions are here to help you learn more.

Surrogate Mother Pay: An Overview

How Much are Surrogates Paid?

If you’re considering becoming a surrogate, you likely have many questions about the entire process, including rules, requirements, and regulations. During this exciting time, it’s natural and important to ask lots of questions and do plenty of research on the surrogacy experience.

At Extraordinary Conceptions, we help hundreds of surrogates, donors, and parents navigate the fertility journey— we’re experts!

Most of our potential surrogates ask many questions about surrogate pay. Truth be told, there is no “one size fits all” compensation rate for surrogates. As with most aspects of the fertility treatment process, many of these specific details depend on the unique circumstances of the surrogate and intended parents, including their location within the United States.

How Much Do Surrogates Make?

So, how much do surrogate mothers make?

There is not only one answer to this question: Surrogacy compensation is not a fixed number. The exact amount for you will vary depending on the involved parties’ circumstances and local laws. The best way to get an exact quote is to contact your fertility agency for more insight. At Extraordinary Conceptions, we’ve made that easy. After you register with us, you’ll be able to speak with our dedicated Surrogacy Admissions team about your unique circumstances and needs to get a better idea of what your particular surrogate pay might be.

Although we’ll need your details to give you an accurate quote, we’re happy to provide information about what surrogates can potentially expect, compensation-wise. The ballpark compensation rates for American surrogates range between $30,000 to $70,000. In some cases, surrogates may receive even more. Again, this will depend on your specific circumstances.

The Surrogate Compensation Breakdown

It’s important to note that, even in the case of surrogacy without compensation (due to local laws,) women who choose this path will receive help and support. At Extraordinary Conceptions, we offer a generous benefits package to all of our surrogates, regardless of additional financial compensation. This benefits package includes financial coverage for lost wages, childcare, medication, and other pregnancy-related costs.

Money is only one small factor that draws most women to this role. That being said, compensated surrogates need to know what to expect in advance of the process. We’ve broken it down for you.

Which Factors Affect Surrogate Mother Pay?

There are several determining factors in deciding the appropriate compensation for surrogates. Some of the most important factors include:

  • Previous Surrogate Experience

We require all of our surrogates to have experience with at least one healthy pregnancy and successful childbirth. Extraordinary Conceptions’ surrogates are required to have previously given birth and are required to still live with their child. However, some of our surrogates have experience with pregnancy, and they’ve already been surrogates, as well. Surrogates with more applied experience typically receive a higher compensation package than first-timers.

  • Location

Location plays an enormous role in the financial side of surrogacy. For starters, the legislature surrounding surrogacy is on a state-by-state level, not a national one. Although surrogacy is fully accepted and legal in most parts of the USA, it’s not the case across the board. Commercial surrogacy is mostly illegal in Louisiana, and compensation for the service is not allowed in Michigan nor Nebraska.

California is especially popular for surrogacy, as it has some of the most progressive legislation surrounding the process. It’s also home to some of the best IVF and fertility clinics in the country. Further, the natural beauty of California draws many intended parents from around the world — it’s a very special place to start life as a family! Because of these draws and the increased demand, California surrogates often receive larger compensation.

Beyond this factor, surrogacy compensation will continue to vary. The United States is a big place, and a dollar goes a lot further in some states than in others. Our compensation rates are determined with this in mind.

  • Employment Status

A pregnancy will, of course, affect one’s work life. Our team at Extraordinary Conceptions accounts for this and works with our surrogates to find solutions for less career-related disruptions. Surrogates with full-time employment are compensated fairly for any lost wages due to time off for doctors’ appointments, bed rest, or other pregnancy-related needs.

  • Type of Pregnancy

Not all pregnancies are the same. Sometimes, our surrogates don’t end up with only one bun in the oven, but with twins or multiples! If this is the case for your surrogate pregnancy, it will impact your compensation package. Surrogates who end up carrying multiples will generally receive higher compensation rates than those pregnant with singletons.

  • Your Intended Parents

Your intended parents come with their own unique set of circumstances and backgrounds. Since they will be the ones paying you, the final compensation rate will depend on what they have the financial means to provide. This is determined by their own financial circumstances, employment status, and place of residency.
